Greg Carlson, 69, died at an Omaha hospital.
OMAHA, Neb. (KSNB) – A man serving a 60-years-to-life sentence for a 1998 Hall County murder has died while in custody.
Greg Carlson, 69, died Tuesday at an Omaha hospital, according to the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS).
Court records show Carlson was sentenced on Nov. 1, 1999, for second-degree murder in the death of his estranged wife, Marilyn Carlson.
Authorities found Marilyn dead in her apartment in April 1998 after she had been stabbed in the chest.
Carlson initially pleaded not guilty. However, before his 1999 trial on a first-degree murder charge, he changed his plea to no contest on a lesser charge, along with a recommendation for a life sentence.
He later attempted to withdraw his plea, but a district judge denied the request and sentenced him to 60 years to life in prison.
Carlson appealed to the Nebraska Supreme Court, but the court ruled that the district court acted within its discretion in denying his motion to withdraw the plea and in issuing the sentence, according to court records.
Carlson was serving his sentence at the Omaha Correctional Center. NDCS said he was receiving treatment for a medical condition at the time of his death.
NDCS added that a grand jury will convene to investigate the death, as is standard protocol when an inmate dies in custody.
