CARTER LAKE, Iowa (KOLN) — Authorities say a man accused of attacking an officer inside a Lincoln Arby’s is also linked to a homicide investigation in Carter Lake, Iowa.

Police arrested 36-year-old Joseph Bertolino, of Florida, after a disturbance at the Arby’s near South 27th Street and Nebraska Parkway around 9:55 p.m. Tuesday. Officers booked him into the Lancaster County Jail on suspicion of attempted first-degree assault on an officer, where he is being held without bond.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety said Bertolino made concerning statements to Lincoln officers while in custody, referencing an incident earlier that evening at the Country Inn and Suites in Carter Lake.

Lincoln police alerted Carter Lake authorities to those statements.

Around the same time, a witness contacted Carter Lake police requesting a welfare check on a man at the hotel. Officers responded and found a body inside a room.

Carter Lake police then requested assistance from the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.

Officials have not released the victim’s name pending identification and notification of next of kin. An autopsy is scheduled at the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner on Thursday.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety said additional charges are pending in Iowa.

The investigation remains ongoing.
