A woman who fired a gun to celebrate the New Year and injured a young girl has been sentenced to one year in jail.

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – A woman who discharged a firearm to ring in the New Year, injuring a young girl, has received a one-year jail sentence.

On Dec. 31, 2024, Tayzhia Hampton fired a rifle near 26th and Blondo. A bullet traveled through the window of a nearby home and struck a 6-year-old girl in the leg.

During court proceedings, Hampton requested a deferred judgment, which would have allowed her to enter a program that could help her avoid a permanent criminal conviction. The judge denied the request.

The court sentenced Hampton to one year and one day in jail for second-degree assault.
