Family members say they have found some closure following the guilty verdict in the 2023 Mount Auburn murder.

CINCINNATI (WXIX) – Jarel Jones has been sentenced to 21 years to life in prison for the killing of Joslynn Brown more than three years ago in Mount Auburn.

Hamilton County Common Pleas Court Judge Victoria Tallent handed down the sentence Thursday morning.

Earlier this month, a jury found Jones, 38, guilty of murder and felonious assault.

According to court records and the victim’s family, Jones shot Brown, 22, multiple times “in cold blood” after an argument in the 100 block of Melvern Place on Feb. 15, 2023.

Police said Jones fled the scene, leaving Brown in the hallway of her apartment building.

Authorities charged him with murder the next day, citing witness statements along with video and forensic evidence, according to his criminal complaint.

The U.S. Marshals Service arrested Jones in Detroit on March 1, 2023, a few weeks after the incident. He is originally from Findlay, Ohio.

Brown, a Cincinnati native, was educated in the Cincinnati Public Schools system.

“Her family and friends were always her pride and joy. Joslynn worked many jobs in her short but full life,” her obituary states.

“Everywhere she went, she always made a connection with those around her. Though she was a little headstrong at times, she always remained loyal to those she loved and kept close.

“Joslynn was the type of person you could call any hour of the day; no matter the time. She was available to just sit on the phone with you. If you were ever in need or just needed someone to be there, she was the one you could call.”
