66-year-old Council Bluffs employee died in fuel tank blast

The explosion occurred at the J-Dog Salvage yard in Bartlett, Iowa, around noon on March 24.

BARTLETT, Iowa (WOWT) – The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office has identified the employee who died in an explosion at an Iowa salvage yard last Tuesday.

In a release issued Monday, authorities named the victim as Blaine N. Schoening, 66, of Council Bluffs.

The explosion happened at the J-Dog Salvage yard in Bartlett at about noon on March 24.

According to the sheriff’s office, investigators determined Schoening was dismantling a “large commercial fuel tank” when the explosion occurred.

“The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office continues to work in coordination with the Iowa State Fire Marshal and Iowa OSHA to finalize the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident,” the release stated.

No other injuries were reported.

Four fire departments, along with the Iowa State Fire Marshal’s Office, responded to the scene.
