LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – Officials have issued a smoke advisory for eastern Nebraska due to prescribed burning across the Central Plains region.

The advisory will remain in effect from 10 p.m. Wednesday through 10 a.m. Thursday.

Air quality may reach moderate (yellow) to unhealthy for sensitive groups (orange) levels, potentially impacting cities including Lincoln, Omaha, Beatrice, Seward, Nebraska City, Blair, David City, and Pender from Wednesday evening into late Thursday morning.

Under moderate AQI conditions, individuals who are especially sensitive to particle pollution may experience health effects. They are advised to limit outdoor activities and reduce exertion levels. Symptoms such as coughing or shortness of breath indicate a need to take it easy.

When AQI levels reach the unhealthy for sensitive groups category, people with heart or lung disease, older adults, children, teenagers, pregnant women, and outdoor workers may be more affected.

During these conditions, sensitive groups should avoid prolonged or strenuous outdoor activities and reduce heavy exertion.

Officials encourage residents to monitor air quality levels and take appropriate precautions to protect their health.
