A driver has sparked outrage on Reddit after sharing a video showing a new type of distraction lighting up nighttime roads.
The clip, posted in the r/f***yourheadlights community, shows a vehicle fitted with a bright LED billboard-style display mounted on its exterior.
As the car moves, the advertisement shifts and flashes, casting intense light across the roadway and nearby vehicles.
The original poster described it bluntly: “This lit up the road. Ad moves. Blindingly bright and distracting.”
The video appears to highlight a growing trend of vehicles being used as mobile LED billboards in urban areas. While roadside advertising has long been common, the shift to animated digital displays moving through traffic introduces a new level of visual distraction.
Beyond annoyance, experts warn that excessive artificial light at night can have broader effects. Studies have shown that such lighting can disrupt natural cycles for plants, animals, and even microscopic organisms.
Research published in Nature Climate Change suggests that bright nighttime lighting can keep plants and microbes active longer than usual, potentially increasing carbon dioxide release.
For drivers, the concern is more immediate. Bright, shifting lights on moving vehicles can impair visibility and create dangerous conditions. While federal rules prohibit signage that causes glare or obstructs vision, enforcement may lag as newer technologies become more widespread.
Online reactions reflected growing frustration.
“I’ve never encountered one myself, and no one else should either. They should be illegal,” one commenter wrote.
Another added, “Capitalism has ‘jumped the shark’ as far as LED use is concerned.”
Those concerned about excessive lighting in their area can report overly bright signage to local transportation or highway authorities.
