Omaha, NE – Warm temperatures, strong winds, and dry air are driving up wildfire risk across eastern Nebraska, prompting a Fire Weather Watch for Saturday as conditions intensify heading into the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, fire danger will increase Friday and is expected to peak Saturday, when Red Flag conditions are most likely. Officials say winds of 15 to 20 mph on Friday will strengthen to 20 to 25 mph Saturday, with gusts reaching up to 35 mph by Sunday.

Humidity levels are also dropping sharply, with minimum relative humidity expected between 20% and 30% Friday, falling further to 15% to 25% Saturday. By Sunday, humidity could dip to between 20% and 40%, keeping fire risk elevated across the region.

Temperatures will stay unseasonably warm, rising into the 80s on Friday and Saturday before edging into the low 90s on Sunday. The mix of heat, wind, and dry vegetation creates ideal conditions for fires to spread rapidly.

The Fire Weather Watch, set for Saturday afternoon and evening, indicates that critical fire weather conditions are possible. The National Weather Service warns that any fires that start could spread quickly and become difficult to control.

Residents are advised to avoid outdoor burning and remain cautious with activities that could ignite flames. Local officials may impose additional restrictions if conditions worsen.

The heightened risk could also affect rural commuters and agricultural operations, where open land increases exposure to fast-moving fires.
