CASS COUNTY, Neb. (KOLN) – A Nebraska City man remains in critical condition following a crash in Cass County on Wednesday.
Cass County sheriff’s deputies responded to a crash involving a semi and a pickup on 24th Avenue just north of Splitt Drive at 12:02 p.m. Crews from Cass County EMS, Murray Fire and Rescue, and Plattsmouth Fire and Rescue also arrived at the scene.
A preliminary investigation found that the pickup, driven by a 21-year-old Nebraska City man, was heading north on 24th Avenue behind a side-dump semi.
The sheriff’s office said a southbound side-dump semi attempted to pass the northbound semi and then collided head-on with the pickup. The southbound semi driver, a 65-year-old man from Omaha, received treatment at the scene and declined transport to a hospital.
Rescuers found the pickup driver trapped inside the vehicle and had to extricate him.
Officials airlifted the Nebraska City man to the University of Nebraska Medical Center in critical condition. His passenger was taken by Murray Fire and Rescue to Nebraska Medicine in Bellevue with minor injuries. Deputies said neither occupant was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
The sheriff’s office noted that dry road conditions created dust, which reduced visibility.
