CINCINNATI (WXIX) — An Ohio Department of Transportation contractor was hit by a vehicle in a construction zone on southbound Interstate 71 and taken to the hospital with multiple injuries.
The incident occurred around 10:56 p.m. Tuesday during a rolling roadblock near the Liberty Street ramp, according to Cincinnati police and an ODOT spokesperson.
The worker was transported to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center and is being treated for a leg injury. Police said he is expected to recover.
However, a relative told FOX19 NOW that the injuries are more severe, including a broken shin, broken knee, broken nose, and a concussion. The worker was also reportedly unable to move his foot for about two hours after the crash.
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the driver involved remained at the scene or left.
ODOT crews are currently replacing a barrier wall in the area and are expected to resume work Wednesday night. The construction is part of a pedestrian bridge and shared-use path project over I-71/471 and Gilbert Avenue, according to ODOT spokesperson Kathleen Fuller.
Drivers should expect additional lane closures in the area, with northbound I-71 closures scheduled to begin two hours after the Reds game ends.
