Local restaurant owner says high commission costs forced a shift in business strategy
The move will help the business avoid cutting staff to keep up with third-party delivery fees.
OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – A local restaurant owner said he paid six figures in fees last year to keep his menu on delivery apps, prompting him to drop third-party services this week.
Javier Trujillo, owner of Javi’s Tacos, said he paid $188,000 in commission fees to apps like DoorDash, Grubhub, and Uber Eats across his five restaurants last year.
“Any service that we use that does delivery and then pushes our menu to their customers, we have paid $188,000 last year,” Trujillo said.
The fees covered his five restaurants: Javi’s Tacos, Time to Rise and Shine, Frosty Mug, Helados Locos, and El Milagro.
Additional costs beyond commission fees
Trujillo said commission fees were not the only expense.
“Maybe there was not enough Dashers in the area and they took the order, we get the order, we made the food, but nobody comes to pick it up. That’s losses on us,” Trujillo said.
Starting this week, he has stopped using third-party delivery services. Customers can still place delivery orders through Toast.
Customer support
Ryan Yarbrough said he supports the decision.
“I like the idea of taking ownership of your entire business and then that way your product isn’t going to be belittled by any middleman,” Yarbrough said.
Krissy Moseley pointed to food quality concerns.
“So like when the customer gets it, it’s not cold and garbage and you’re spending extra for all the extra fees on the apps and everything,” Moseley said.
Trujillo said he believes customers will adjust to the change.
“I think we have a strong enough brand that people, if they want to order, they can order directly from our website and still have one of those parties deliver, but then we’re not responsible and then those parties are not taking the commission out of us,” Trujillo said.
He added that the shift will help him avoid cutting staff to offset third-party delivery fees.
