People in Monroe County, along with some residents in Toledo, said they noticed a brief rumble from the 2.9 magnitude earthquake in Ontario.
AMHERSTBURG, ON — Residents across Monroe County, and even parts of Toledo, felt a tremor from an earthquake in Canada late Sunday morning, according to the United States Geological Survey.
The USGS confirmed that a 2.9 magnitude earthquake struck around 10:30 a.m. near Amherstburg, Ontario, just south of Detroit.
Residents in Monroe and Wayne counties reported a short rumble, with some saying they heard a “loud bang” during the quake.
Across Lake Erie, people in eastern Lucas County also felt the tremor.
According to Michigan Tech University, earthquakes ranging from 2.5 to 5.4 on the Richter scale are “often felt, but only cause minor damage.”
Globally, an estimated 500,000 earthquakes fall within this range each year, compared to just 10–15 major earthquakes that can cause serious damage.
