Authorities in Ohio are investigating the deaths of an elderly couple found in their home after a welfare check, in what is believed to be a murder-suicide.
Claire and Frederick Buckley were discovered with gunshot wounds after deputies responded to a request to check on them. While officials believe the case involves a murder-suicide, the motive remains unclear. Those who knew the couple said the news came as a shock.
Welfare Check Leads to Discovery
Deputies from the Butler County Sheriff’s Office responded just before 3 p.m. on April 1, 2026, after the couple’s son-in-law reported he had not heard from them in several days.
When deputies entered the home through the garage, they found a woman on the couch and a man on the floor, both deceased. A dog was also found dead inside the home.
The Butler County Coroner’s Office identified the couple as 72-year-old Claire Buckley and 70-year-old Frederick Buckley. Claire’s death was ruled a homicide, while Frederick’s was ruled a suicide. The investigation is ongoing.
Neighbors Express Shock
Neighbors described the couple as kind and friendly, struggling to understand what may have led to the incident.
“It makes zero sense,” a next-door neighbor told local media, calling the Buckleys “very kind people” who “always had something nice to say.”
According to neighbors, the couple had lived in their neighborhood in Liberty Township, Ohio for over a decade before recently moving to Columbus, Ohio, where they had built a new home. They had returned to Liberty Township because they operated a financial planning business from the residence where they were found.
The neighbor said Claire Buckley had recently spoken about settling into the new home and appeared happy.

Those close to the couple said they seemed content with their lives. Neighbors recalled seeing them playing with their dog, Luna, in the backyard just days before their deaths.
“They laugh out loud watching her… they get total joy out of that dog,” the neighbor said.
The incident has left the community searching for answers, as many say the situation appears completely out of character for the couple. Authorities continue to investigate what led to the tragic outcome.
