COVINGTON, Ky. (WXIX) – Authorities have found the body of a Covington woman who had been reported missing near Devou Park.
According to Covington Police, Carol Groves was discovered Saturday in the 800 block of Crescent Avenue. She had been missing since December.
Her son, Tyler Carroll, said his mother was found deceased inside a tire at what appeared to be a homeless camp. He added that law enforcement informed him she had been dead for some time before being located.
Family grew worried after losing contact
Carroll explained that his mother struggled with addiction and would sometimes disappear for days or even a week. However, she would always reach out to one of her children or her own mother.
“She struggled with addiction and it wasn’t nothing for her to go do this for a couple of days or a week at a time, but she always reached out to one of the children. Especially one of the daughters that she was closest to and especially her mom,” Carroll said.
As time passed without any contact, the family became increasingly concerned, leading them to report her missing in December.
Carroll said the area where she was found is near the 12th Street bridge, a place where she often stayed.
“My mom was homeless by choice for decisions she has made in her life and that’s the life she pretty much lived. I’ll be 42 this year, and that’s the life she lived but I still loved my mom,” he said.
Son says closure brings some peace
Carroll said the outcome was not what the family had hoped for, but he is thankful to finally have answers.
“That’s basically what I was looking for was closure. I mean 5 months in I knew that I wasn’t going to get a phone call that my mom had won the lottery and was living on an island somewhere. I knew that this was what it was going to be. I didn’t know it was going to be as horrible as it is, or as horrible as it sounds but I will be able to maybe sleep tonight,” he said.
Covington Police said the cause of Groves’ death has not yet been determined, and it remains unclear whether foul play was involved.
The investigation into her death is ongoing.
The family has created a GoFundMe page to help cover funeral expenses.
