The county treasurer is alerting taxpayers about scammers posing as county officials.

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – The Douglas County Treasurer is warning residents about a scam involving fake emails related to property tax payments.

Scammers are sending messages claiming recipients have unpaid property taxes and must pay through wire transfer or face additional penalties.

The fraudulent emails closely mimic the official address of the county treasurer’s office, with only a slight difference — using a “.proton.me” domain instead of the official “.gov.”

Officials emphasized that the treasurer’s office will never request payment through wire transfer and will not send emails from a Proton Mail account.
