Ex-Omaha LGBTQ+ activist pleads guilty to $99K nonprofit theft in New York

On This Post

Dominique Morgan, a former Omaha LGBTQ+ activist and nonprofit leader, pleaded guilty in New York to stealing approximately $99,000 from a Brooklyn-based nonprofit, The Okra Project, which she briefly led.

According to the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office, the funds were intended to pay bail for indigent, Black trans people but were instead diverted by Morgan for personal expenses between 2022 and 2024.

Key Details of the Case:

  • Misappropriation of Funds: Instead of using the money for bail assistance, Morgan used it for personal expenditures, including a $19,000 California closet makeover, payments for a Mercedes-Benz, clothing store purchases, and restaurant meals.
  • Fraudulent Activity: An audit revealed that Morgan submitted 23 fraudulent bail receipts for individuals who were not actually arrested or helped by the organization.
  • Previous Standing: Morgan, a Nebraska native, was formerly the executive director of the prison abolition nonprofit Black & Pink and was recognized in Omaha with a street named after her in 2023.
  • Charges: Morgan was initially indicted on one count of second-degree grand larceny and 23 counts of first-degree falsifying business records.
