A Local 12 meteorologist known for his cat-themed segments is stepping away from the station after spending eight years on air.

Paul Poteet, a 40-year media veteran, will leave the WKRC-TV studio after the noon broadcast on Wednesday, March 18, according to a Facebook post shared by his colleague, Chief Meteorologist John Gumm.

According to WVXU, Poteet delivers weather reports from Saturday through Wednesday morning on the CBS affiliate. During his Saturday morning forecasts, called “Caturdays,” he features cat photos submitted by viewers.

WVXU reported that Poteet is leaving his role at Local 12 to make more time for his grandkids on weekends. However, the 63-year-old will remain busy. He will continue recording weekday weather forecasts for 14 radio stations, host a morning and afternoon show for various Indiana radio stations, provide voice-overs for films and commercials, and take on other work, according to the local NPR station.

Poteet started his on-air career as a teenager, working as a DJ at a radio station in Fort Wayne, Indiana. In the mid-1980s, he transitioned to television weather in Indianapolis.

As a child, the Huntington, Indiana, native would pretend to present TV weather reports in his basement while studying weather system patterns, according to his staff bio.

Readers of “NUVO” named him “Best Indianapolis Weatherman” four times, and he also placed second for “Sexiest TV Personality” in 2005, WVXU reported.
