Nonprofit Heart Ministry Center plans to operate the store at 25th and Lake streets.
OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – Plans for a new grocery store in North Omaha moved a step closer to construction after the city’s planning department approved a zoning change for the site.
On Wednesday, the planning department rezoned an open lot at 25th and Lake streets from residential to commercial. The nonprofit Heart Ministry Center is set to operate the grocery store.
“We’re really, really happy to be a part of this process, this activity in North Omaha, because it needs it, because of access, jobs, and the opportunity to grow,” said Damany Rahn, CEO of Heart Ministry Center.
According to the nonprofit, the grocery store will improve access to food while also creating job opportunities.
Donald McPherson, who has owned Styles of Evolution on 24th Street for 20 years, said the addition of the store will benefit his business and others nearby.
“Our business in particular, I think it’s going to be great because foot traffic. And we’re hoping that it’ll drive more foot traffic our way,” McPherson said.
He added that the neighborhood still has plenty of room for growth.
“When you start talking North Omaha, the opportunity is limitless. You know, there’s just so much room to grow,” he said.
Heart Ministry Center said construction on the grocery store is expected to begin this fall.
