William Shatner, the iconic 94-year-old actor known for his role as Captain James T. Kirk in the ‘Star Trek’ franchise, is set to undergo shoulder surgery after a fall from his horse late last year. The surgery, scheduled for Wednesday, March 11, aims to address a serious injury he sustained during the incident.
Shatner described the procedure as a “new type of shoulder operation called a reverse something or other.” He humorously explained, “You put the ball in the socket and the socket in the thing, and you come out 10 hours later, and you’re pain-free,” during an acceptance speech at the 53rd annual Saturn Awards in Burbank, California.
Reflecting on his accident, Shatner admitted to feeling “old, tired and kind of hurt,” while recounting how he fell from his horse, stating, “I’m not a young stuntman anymore. I started to roll, but hit the dirt with my shoulder. So I wrecked my shoulder.” He attributes the fall to his horse’s unpredictable behavior.
In addition to his recent injury, Shatner faced health concerns last September when he was hospitalized due to blood sugar issues. He later clarified that the situation was exaggerated and reassured fans that he was fine after a precautionary hospital visit.
Shatner, who celebrates his 95th birthday later this month, has had a storied career spanning decades, including roles in ‘TJ Hooker’, ‘Boston Legal’, and films like ‘Miss Congeniality’. He previously battled stage 4 melanoma but is currently in remission after successful treatment.
As the ‘Star Trek’ legend prepares for surgery, fans and colleagues alike wish him a swift recovery.
