KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A 22-year-old Nebraska man died late Friday night after another driver traveling the wrong way struck his car.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol said the crash happened around 10:20 p.m. Friday when the man was driving a 2012 Toyota Prius in the northbound lanes of Interstate 49 near Missouri Highway 291. A driver operating a 2018 Ford Explorer southbound in the northbound lanes collided with the vehicle.
After the crash, the Prius caught fire and became engulfed in flames.
Authorities pronounced the driver of the Prius dead at the scene. Three other passengers in the Prius, all from Nebraska, were also injured in the crash. One passenger was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries, while the other two suffered injuries described as minor.
The driver of the Explorer, a 20-year-old man from Lee’s Summit, was also hospitalized with serious injuries.
