CINCINNATI (WXIX) — Authorities are investigating after more than a dozen dead coyotes were found dumped along a hillside in Miami Township, Hamilton County, in what officials are calling an illegal littering case.

According to the Ohio Division of Wildlife, the animals appear to have been left on private property without the owner’s permission.

A local resident, Kyle Boreing, said his son and their dog first discovered a few carcasses about a week ago.

“The dog started sniffing down through here, and he looked over and saw maybe two or three coyote carcasses,” Boreing said.

Over time, the number of dead animals increased, leading Boreing to believe someone may be repeatedly dumping them at the site.

“He counted maybe 12 or 13 total,” he said.

Gunshot wounds found

Investigators confirmed that some of the coyotes showed signs of gunshot wounds. However, officials said there is no evidence to suggest the animals were poisoned, despite concerns from nearby residents.

Authorities noted that while it is legal for property owners to hunt coyotes and dispose of them on their own land, dumping carcasses on someone else’s property without permission violates the law.

Ongoing investigation

The property owner said she was unaware of the situation and did not authorize anyone to leave the animals there.

Officials say they are actively following leads, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Meanwhile, residents say the growing number of carcasses has created unpleasant conditions in the neighborhood.

“It’s not good — you can smell it just standing here. It doesn’t smell good, it doesn’t look good,” Boreing said.

He added that the main concern now is identifying who is responsible and stopping the dumping.
